Severe Flooding Devastates Over 100 Villages in Feni’s Fulgazi, Parshuram, and Chhagalnaiya Upazilas

Severe flooding has struck three upazilas in Feni—Fulgazi, Parshuram, and Chhagalnaiya—leaving over 100 villages submerged and more than 100,000 people stranded. These upazilas, located near the Indian border, have seen their rivers, including the Muhuri, Kahua, and Silonia, exceed the danger mark, as reported by Google’s flood alert system.

Local sources revealed that the floodwaters have inundated more than 40 villages in Fulgazi Upazila alone. Similarly, over 45 villages in Parshuram Upazila are submerged. In Chhagalnaiya Upazila, several villages are also underwater, leaving roads, ponds, and cropland submerged. In many areas, the floodwaters have reached the roofs and tin sheds of houses, forcing residents to evacuate to safer locations.

The local administration, along with various volunteer organizations, has been providing relief aid to those affected by the flooding. Earlier last month, cracks appeared at 15 points along the banks of the Muhuri, Kahua, and Silonia rivers. Although repairs were made, further breaches occurred at 12 more points in the barrage earlier this month, leading to the flooding of over 100 villages. Feni resident Sulaiman Hazari commented, “The damage to infrastructure, crops, and fisheries has exceeded Tk30 crore. Now, just 15 days later, another flood has occurred.”

Feni Deputy Commissioner Musammat Shahina Akhter assured that the administration is actively engaged in relief efforts and rescue operations, working tirelessly to mitigate the effects of the disaster. “The situation is critical, but we are doing everything we can to assist those in need,” she added.

Abul Kashem, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Water Development Board, reported that the water level of the Muhuri River is currently flowing 86 centimeters above the danger mark, exacerbating the already dire situation.

Munir Hossain, a meteorologist at the Feni Weather Office, stated, “In the last 24 hours, 97 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded,” which has significantly contributed to the flooding. With continuous rainfall and river levels still high, the situation remains precarious for the residents of Feni.
