The Rise of Electric Vehicle Conversions: A Greener Future for Older Cars

Share

As London taxis age, many face the scrapheap due to regulations limiting licenses for vehicles older than 12 years. However, an innovative trend is offering these classic black cabs, and other vehicles, a second life: electric vehicle (EV) conversions.

This new industry retrofits petrol or diesel-powered vehicles with electric batteries and motors, effectively transforming them into zero-emission vehicles. One notable player, Clipper Automotive, has converted a 2007 black cab, replacing its diesel engine with an electric motor and battery. The result? A smoother, quieter ride with significantly lower emissions.

The movement extends beyond London’s taxis. Companies across Europe are electrifying various types of vehicles, from classic cars to buses, vans, and even tractors. These conversions help reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing new vehicles and offer a more sustainable alternative to scrapping old ones. David Lorenz of Upcycled Electric Vehicles (UEV) highlights the benefits of converting larger vehicles like bin lorries, providing a cheaper and greener option than buying new.

EV conversions aren’t just for eco-conscious consumers; they also make economic sense. Osman Boyner of Bedeo points out that converted electric vans can cut operating costs dramatically, with savings in fuel alone potentially recouping the conversion costs within three years. For businesses with specialized vehicles, like refrigerated vans and ambulances, the ability to retain the existing body and features while upgrading to electric is particularly appealing.

However, challenges remain. Converted vehicles must meet stringent safety standards, and current regulatory frameworks, like London’s ultra-low emissions zone (Ulez), often struggle to accommodate these retrofitted cars. Alex Howard, founder of Clipper, advocates for clearer policies and incentives to support the growing EV conversion market.

Despite these hurdles, the push towards electrification is gaining momentum. By offering a greener, cost-effective solution to vehicle owners, the EV conversion industry is playing a crucial role in reducing emissions and extending the life of older vehicles, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
