In a significant step towards improving disaster preparedness and resilience, a new multi-purpose disaster shelter has been inaugurated in Khonjonighona, Cox’s Bazar (CXB), Bangladesh. The shelter, constructed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is part of a broader initiative to safeguard vulnerable communities in disaster-prone regions.

This new facility is one of 25 newly built shelters by USAID in the region, contributing to Bangladesh’s longstanding partnership with the United States. Since 2001, over 900 disaster shelters have been constructed throughout the country with U.S. assistance, providing safe havens during cyclones, floods, and other natural disasters.

A Commitment to Safety and Community The shelter is designed to serve dual purposes, functioning as a community center during normal times and a critical refuge during emergencies. Equipped with robust infrastructure to withstand severe weather, the facility can accommodate hundreds of people, ensuring safety during extreme conditions.

Officials from USAID highlighted the importance of such initiatives in building a safer and more resilient Bangladesh.

“Working together to build a more resilient future is at the heart of this project,” said a USAID representative at the opening ceremony. The shelters not only offer protection but also foster a sense of community and security in high-risk areas.

Strengthening Bangladesh’s Disaster Response Bangladesh’s low-lying geography makes it particularly vulnerable to climate-related disasters, and the country has a history of devastating cyclones. The network of shelters, supported by the U.S., plays a crucial role in minimizing the impact of these events, reducing loss of life, and facilitating quicker recovery.

The new shelter in Khonjonighona is a symbol of continued cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States, emphasizing a shared commitment to disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.

Supporting Local Communities These shelters also provide valuable resources for the local population, serving as venues for community gatherings, training, and education during non-crisis periods. By integrating community development with disaster preparedness, the initiative aims to improve overall resilience and quality of life for the residents of Cox’s Bazar.

The project underscores the growing focus on global partnerships in addressing climate resilience and disaster management, with Bangladesh being a leading example of how international cooperation can create safer and stronger communities.

USAID’s Ongoing Support

With over two decades of collaboration, USAID’s efforts have been pivotal in reinforcing Bangladesh’s capacity to manage natural disasters, ensuring that more lives are saved and livelihoods are protected in the face of environmental challenges.
