Environmental group Dhoritri Rokkhae Amra has called for urgent climate justice and sustainable development. They demand renewable energy transitions and legal accountability for environmental damage caused by projects.
Environmental and climate-focused organization Dhoritri Rokkhae Amra has called for ensuring climate justice and preventing environmental damage from development projects. The demands were made on Sunday, the final day of the Second Climate Justice Assembly.
Speakers highlighted that development projects should not harm local ecosystems, biodiversity, or public resources. They emphasized the need for legal accountability for corporations to compensate affected individuals. A roadmap to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy was also urged.
Concerns were raised about the adverse effects of development in coastal areas, including livelihood losses and the disappearance of crops like salt, watermelon, and betel leaf.
Key demands included participatory local adaptation planning, accurate assessments of climate and development pressures, protecting gender and indigenous rights, strengthening embankments, phasing out coal-based power plants, and transitioning to renewable energy. Immediate actions to curb water, air, and soil pollution were also emphasized.
The organization warned against expanding fossil fuel use, highlighting the increasing burden of climate-related debt and urging sustainable solutions.
