Saudi Arabia’s rare snowfall turns desert into winter white wonder

Share

In a stunning twist of nature, parts of Saudi Arabia experienced rare snowfall in mid-December 2025, transforming arid landscapes into a breathtaking winter wonderland. The unexpected event, driven by a powerful cold air mass from the north, blanketed higher elevations in northern regions with snow, delighting residents and sparking widespread excitement.

The heaviest snowfall occurred in the Tabuk region, particularly around Jabal Al-Lawz (Almond Mountain), where temperatures plummeted to -4°C. Snow also fell in parts of Hail, the Trojena highlands, and even lighter flurries reached areas north of Riyadh, such as Al-Ghat. Vast stretches of desert dunes and rugged mountain slopes turned white, creating scenes more typical of alpine regions than the Arabian Peninsula.

Residents embraced the rare weather, with many venturing outdoors to build snowmen, dance in the snow, and even ski on improvised slopes. Social media exploded with videos and photos, trending hashtags like #JabalAlLawz as people celebrated the “historic” moment. Some initially wondered if the images were AI-generated, but verified reports from the National Center for Meteorology (NCM) confirmed the phenomenon.

Experts emphasize that while snowfall is uncommon in most of Saudi Arabia, it is a recurring winter occurrence in northern high-altitude areas influenced by Mediterranean weather systems. Astronomer Mohammed bin Reddah Al Thaqafi noted that such events happen periodically between December and February, though this system’s reach into lower areas was particularly notable.

This sudden environmental shift highlights the Kingdom’s diverse climate potential, from scorching deserts to snowy peaks. As the cold snap eases, the snow has left behind a memorable spectacle and a reminder of nature’s surprises.
