Schools Reopen in Manipur After Deadly Ethnic Violence

Share

Schools reopen in Manipur on Tuesday after a week-long closure due to severe ethnic violence. The local government made this announcement as violence subsided across the northeastern state. Manipur, which borders war-torn Myanmar, has faced ongoing ethnic conflict since May 2023.

The fighting primarily involves the Meitei majority, who are predominantly Hindu, and the Kuki community, mainly Christian. Since the conflict began, over 200 people have lost their lives. Communities across the state have split into rival groups, creating deep divisions in Manipur.

The recent surge in violence saw at least 11 people killed earlier this month. Insurgents reportedly used rockets and drones to drop bombs during the attacks. These events triggered violent protests in the state capital, Imphal, particularly by Meitei students. In response, the authorities imposed a curfew and cut off internet services in parts of the state.

With the violence now easing, the Manipur government has allowed schools to resume normal classes. The announcement comes a day after internet services were restored. The state chief minister, Biren Singh, urged residents to use the internet responsibly. He asked people to avoid posting or sharing inflammatory content that could reignite tensions.

The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities stems from long-standing disputes over land and government jobs. Rights activists have criticized local leaders, accusing them of exploiting ethnic divisions for political gain. Manipur is governed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which follows a Hindu nationalist agenda.

Despite the reopening of schools and restoration of internet services, the situation remains tense. Authorities are working to maintain peace and prevent further violence in the region. However, the deep-rooted ethnic tensions in Manipur continue to pose significant challenges for the state’s stability.

As the people of Manipur move towards normalcy, the government remains focused on promoting peace. Efforts to address the underlying issues between the Meitei and Kuki communities are crucial for long-term harmony. The reopening of schools is a hopeful step toward restoring order and rebuilding the state’s future.
