The Bangladesh Medical Students’ Society (BMSS) successfully hosted its flagship National General Assembly 2026 (NGA’26) on 28th August,2026 at North South University, bringing together medical students and young healthcare professionals from across Bangladesh for a day of thematic discussions, scientific exchange, clinical learning, career exploration and leadership development.
Held under the theme “One Pledge, One Bond: Doctors’ Rights Above All”, the assembly brought together 800+ participants from 90+ local committees, creating a national platform for future healthcare professionals to connect with experts, exchange ideas and engage with some of the most pressing issues in medicine and public health.
The opening ceremony featured National Professor A K Azad Khan, Head of the Health Reform Commission and President of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS), Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office & UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, Prof. Dr. Shamim Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Treasurer, Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC), Prof. Dr. Fawzia Hossain, Chair of RGOC IRC & Life Member of Bangladesh Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BDSCCP), Prof. Dr. Md. The day began with the BMSS Buzz Revealing Ceremony, followed by the Standing Committee and Supporting Division Activity Fair, showcasing the diverse initiatives led by BMSS throughout the year. The assembly also featured the LC Fair, Clinical Case Report and Research Abstract Presentations, giving participants a platform to showcase local committee activities, clinical learning and student-led research.
One of the major highlights of NGA’26 was its Thematic Sessions and External Panel Discussions, featuring six broad areas of discussion: From Theory to Practice: Rethinking Medical and Dental Education; Outbreak on Repeat: Measles, Dengue & the Fight Against Recurring Epidemics; Reproductive Health and Rights for All; Resilience Beyond Borders: Disaster Management in Urban & Refugee Settings; Beyond the Numbers: Research as a Catalyst for Better Public Health; and Beyond Survival: Advancing Women’s Health, Rights, and Safety.
The programme then moved into parallel Clinical and Career Development Sessions, covering acute cardiac emergencies, drowning management, ATLS-based trauma care, modern diabetes care and obstetric emergencies. Participants also took part in hands-on suturing and dentistry sessions, adding a practical dimension to the assembly.
The career segment, “Mapping the White Coat: Exploring Career Pathways Across Clinical Practice, Research, Academia & Global Medicine,” offered participants a broader perspective on professional opportunities beyond conventional clinical practice.
The assembly further featured an NSU Public Health Session and a plenary discussion, bringing together the day’s conversations around healthcare, public health and professional development.
The closing ceremony was graced by Md Azizul Haque , Secretary General, Alzheimer’s Society , Bangladesh; Dr Quazi Ahmed Zaki, Director, IEDCR, Dr. Saima Khan, Former Country Director, UNAIDS & Advisor, BMSS, Prof. Dr. Abu Jamil Faisel, Advisor, BMSS & Adjunct Faculty, Public Health Department, State University, Bangladesh Prof Mazharul Islam, Director, Planning, Directorate General of Medical Education; Prof. Dr. Md Nasir Uddin, Director, National Institutes of Burn & Plastic Surgery. Our Special guest was Prof Dr Halida Hanum Akhter, Senior Faculty, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Chairman, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society & our Guest of Honor was Prof Dr Firoza Begum, President, OGSB.
The day concluded with the Closing and Award Ceremony, recognising outstanding contributions and achievements across the BMSS community.
With its blend of high-level dialogue, student research, clinical skills, public health engagement, career development and youth leadership, NGA’26 reinforced BMSS’s commitment to preparing a generation of healthcare professionals equipped to learn, lead and contribute beyond the boundaries of the classroom.
