Sylhet was struck by a second wave of flash floods during the early hours, causing significant damage to fish farmers and agriculturists in the area. Moklisur Rahman, a pisciculturist from Gowainghat upazila, lamented the depletion of his fish stock valued at Tk 7 lakh from his three ponds. Thousands of fish farmers in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Moulvibazar experienced similar misfortunes, as 13,650 ponds were reportedly destroyed.
The divisional fisheries department reports that fish farmers have incurred a significant loss of Tk 133.61 crore, with Tk 101.18 crore being attributed to Sylhet district alone. Deputy Director Md Anowar Hossain affirmed that active measures are being taken to safeguard the indigenous fish sanctuaries and the species that have been displaced due to the floods.
The agricultural industry is likewise confronted with significant repercussions. More than 26,000 hectares of agricultural land are currently underwater, causing damage to Aush paddy, seedbeds, and vegetable crops. Mati Lal Halder, an official from the divisional agricultural extension department, stated that the assessment of financial losses cannot be determined until the floodwaters completely subside, as there is a possibility that certain crops may survive.
Yesterday, the flood situation started to improve as the water level of the Surma River at Sylhet City Point dropped below the critical level. However, the Kushiyara River is still over the danger threshold at different locations. The recovery process is being facilitated by a small amount of rainfall and clear skies. According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre and Water Development Board, the flood situation is anticipated to improve even more in the next 72 hours.
21.08 lakh individuals in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Moulvibazar have been impacted by the floods, and there are currently 53,244 individuals seeking refuge in shelter centres. Sylhet city, which saw five floods within a span of three weeks, is currently grappling with significant difficulties as it strives to recover from the recent deluge.
